Change iSCSI ACL in running iSCSI active/active environment

$

Hi,

currently I'm blocking unwanted iSCSI path's (i.e. via Management Network) by enabling just a /21 network and disabling 0.0.0.0/0 in iSCSI target ACL.
It seems I need iSCSI connectivity via another network segment soon. Is there a (hidden?) way to change those ACL without a productive interruption (stopping HA, removing iSCSI targets, change ACL's, adding iSCSI targets and starting HA cluster)?

New update available: Open-E JovianDSS update 12

JDSSup12_770x481_blog_v2.jpg

Our developers improved the software-defined Open-E JovianDSS and now the new update 12 is available to download directly from our website. The main feature included in this update is the Off-site Data Protection Service (ODPS) which creates rotational auto-snapshots and asynchronously replicates snapshots deltas to local or remote destinations. Plus, it enables setting up backup with an interval and retention plan or disaster recovery for virtual environments like VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix Xen etc

NAS with 2 Volumes crashed - files unaccessible

Hi @ all,

even though our Open-E Nas 2.0 is pretty much out-dated (2005) I am hoping someone might shine some light on my problem(s):

Basically/short:
  1. There were two volumes, each on on RAID set (1st RAID 5, 2nd RAID1)
  2. The server crashed due to power loss
  3. The server started up with both RAID Sets degraded
  4. Rebuilding the RAID1 was successful.
  5. RAID Set 2 is "unusable"/Inoperable. I am afraid that during the rebuild another HDD crashed.

Currently the NAS says there were no volumes available.
Under Setup - Disk Manager it detects one Unit, the repaired RAID1. But it is NOT added; adding it now would format the whole RAID1.

I tried to attach one HDD of the RAID1 to a machine and booting up a unix..But the whole disk is shown as "unallocated" disk space.
I have read something like this before:
http://forum.open-e.com/showthread.p...t-no-partition

I honestly don't know much about open-e, I didn't set it up in the first place. But I believe that the "disk/volume information" for BOTH volumes were saved to the degraded/unusable array.

Is there any way to access the files on the "healthy" RAID set WITHOUT the other Array?? :(

Of course I am trying to get the second array back up working but it might be a complete data loss...There are no backups (not my fault either), I just would like to access the data on the healthy disks..

Anyone with a hint?

JBOD Chassis

Hi All,

We currently use 2 x DSS V7 with Active-Active iscsi clusters and are looking at storage solutions with more features such as thin provisioning, Tiering, SSD caching etc.. We are looking at windows storage spaces and scale out file server and Jovian. My question is, with Jovian can we have redundent(mirrored) JOBD chassis? I feel that a JBOD chassis can still be a single point of failure

Thanks

sudden very slow performance on file server

Hey Forum,

Preamble 1: Apologies in advance, I'm not a sys admin, we don't have the scale to be able to employ one...
Preamble 2: We're more than happy to pay someone who knows what they're doing to point us in the right direction. I'm unable to even get in touch with Open-E as I cannot open a ticket at all for this as the OS is so old, and their doesn't seem any other way of contacting support?

We have a 5 year old file server running DSS6. It has run glitch free constantly. On Monday of this week I came in and found that access to the server is very slow. The box has two fibre connections each serving an independent network (both running windows). Both networks exhibit the same problems of slow access / very slow read / write, so am presuming (probably incorrectly) that the server is causing the issue. However I cannot find anything in the logs / status etc that suggests there is a problem with the server (also not entirely sure which logs I should even be looking at).

Pinging the fileserver from either network works fine and is fast.

We desperately need to know if the server is falling over, so we can start thinking about replacement if we have to. As mentioned up top, we're willing to pay for assistance.

Kind regards,

Jules

Q: Install to Supermicro -> Kernel panic after first boot - LSI raid card

$

Hi, I am trying to find out if there is a straightforward way to adjust boot options / to see if I can get a working stable config on this hardware:

  • Supermicro X10SDV-TLN4F mainboard with Xeon CPU
  • LSI 9271-4i with 2 x SSD in a Raid1 volume; and 2 x SATA in a second Raid1 volume

The installer boots fine, and allows me to select either drive to install OpenE DSSv7. I specify the first raid1 volume, installer proceeds normally and then completes, asks for reboot when done.

It reboots, first shows me a list of default assigned IPs on the interfaces of the host. Then, after a few seconds, I end up with an 'ongoing' kernel dump style message that updates every ~30 seconds, and that is about the end of the story.

Please see attached picture/link for what the panic screen console looks like.

-- LSI raid card is a known problem ?
-- Motherboard / chipset ?
-- something else ?

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, I am curious. Is there support in OpenE Current - to run as a VM on KVM virtual platform / with VirtIO HDD and NIC support ?

I have just tried to do such an install, and I am told, "no storage detected" when the installer boots.

Thanks,

Tim

Changing LAN IP on DSSv7

Hello Open-E users,

We have the need to change network addressing of our LAN. The auxiliary paths will not change (remaining in their own VLANs).
Is there a special procedure to achieve this ?

I suppose :
(obvious prerequisite: configure new IP subnet, and DNS)
1- Shutdown all VMs
2- On Windows, remove all iSCSI targets
3- Stop Failover on both nodes
4- Change IP on eth0 on both nodes (reboot required, I guess)
5- Pray, then restart Failover
6- Reconnect iSCSI targets with new IPs
7- Restart VMs

Does it seem a good roadmap ?

Thanks in advance

Xavier

XenServer NFS configuration

Hi all,
I'm new to Open-e storage, previously I have used Openfiler as storage system for my labs, with very good performance and reliability.

I've done a trial install of DSS SOHO v7 and I've tried to connect my lab's XenServer host to a NFS share.
When I try to scan in XenCenter for SR repositories available it seems I have a permission denied problem. Checking the system logs I have found

May 19 20:31:38 [daemon.warning] rpc.mountd[28642]: refused mount request from 10.37.10.101 for /WD1TBOnboard/ (/WD1TBOnboard): unmatched host

I have explicitly permitted Read and Write on the Open-e configuration the 10.37.10.0/24 network and also I tried with the XenServer host ip.

Anyone have faced this problem?

Thanks

Upgrade from DSS V6 Lite SE to DSS v7 SOHO

I have a Data Storage Software V6 Lite SE Version: 6.0up98.8501.7337 64bit with Licensed Storage Capacity: 8 TB, installed in a 2 GB DOM, in a little NAS server with 4 HDs SATA, just used with SMB share .
Can I update in-place to DSS V7 SOHO, with correct extension to 8TB, maintaining volume and SMB shares definitions and data saved in?

Thank you.

I have installed the trial and cant configure a fiber channel connection for a fiber volume I have setup.

This is the message

No Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter found. All Groups and HBAs settings will be saved but will have no functionality until you plug in appropriate HBA card.

Hardware status is reports a fc card installed as per below?

Fibre Channel controllers
Emulex Corporation Zephyr LightPulse Fibre Channel Host Adapter (rev 02)

Is this something to do with the trial?

Thanks
Chris

VMWare lost connectivity to storage device during failover

When we do a failover VMWare lost the connection and gives the following error:

Stateless event alarm

Alarm Definition:
([Event alarm expression: Lost Storage Connectivity] OR [Event alarm expression: Lost Storage Path Redundancy] OR [Event alarm expression: Degraded Storage Path Redundancy])

Event details:
Lost connectivity to storage device eui.64327556714b7666. Path vmhba38:C0:T2:L1 is down. Affecteddatastores: Unknown.

When we do a rescan for datastores, it hangs. We can only fix it to reboot the "slave node". (we are running active/passive)
When it's going to reboot, everything is comming back online, but a lot of servers has at that moment corrupt data.
When we failover back to the other side, same problem, and fixed after rebooting the "slave node".

We are running the following Open-E version:

Version: 7.0up16.9101.16323 64bit
Release date: 2015-05-29

And VMWare ESXi 5.1.0

Did anyone has this problem also? And how fix this?

Had an Error that made me laugh but was serious

We have a Active/Passive configuration and on Saturday, we had alarms that the replication partner was not reachable. So i click on the console of the primary server and it said "Network card is not accessible do you have some form of power saving enable, I am dazed and confused" :D

Ok so the network card had died in the primary server, so i deleted the binding between the servers and created a new bond with spare network cards that where in the servers. Recreated the partnership, recreated replication tasks but they would not start, i cleared the metadata but nothing would work, i even delete and recreated the destination volumes. It just kept saying already part of a replication task. So I built a new server and migrated the data across. What else could I have done to get this working correctly?

Do you get better performance by create a new ISCSI LV over just expanding it

A quick question to find out what is the best way to expand a ISCSI volume if you care about performance.

Do you get better performance by creating a new Logical Volume or expanding the Logical Volume?

I need to increase the size of an ISCSI Logical Volume I know I can just increase the size, but would it better to create a new volume with the correct size from scratch?

This is a new system, so want to make sure I have the best performance from my Logical Volumes from day one.

Thanks,

Andrew

NEW update: Off-site Data Protection with consistent snapshots now available in up15

$

Open-E has just announced a new update of its ZFS-based data storage software Open-E JovianDSS! The update 15 of the software includes the Off-site Data Protection feature which provides a strategy for Backup, Archiving and Disaster Recovery, and doesn’t need to have an additional backup agent installed. It enables the setup of an application-consistent backup (incl. databases, operating systems, virtual machines etc.) with a retention interval as a Disaster Recovery plan for virtual environments based on VMware. This way, servers with crucial data can be easily and instantly restored in case of an unexpected disaster. It prevents data loss and minimizes the recovery time.

Main benefits of the Off-site Data Protection:
  • Consistent backup solution that prevents data loss
  • Fully integrated and high-speed data recovery
  • No backup agents required
  • Low RPO and RTO to minimize the amount of lost data and recovery time
  • Highly customizable to individual requirements

SSLv3 Error - no access to OPEN-E Web with actual browsers

we like to address the known issue with SSL3 errors accessing the OPEN-E web interface. Actual browser versions do not support SSLv3. Although there are some workarounds for this issue, this point should be fixed by OPEN-E. Would you please inform about plans to fix this?

Interface frozen

Hi

A few times now i have experienced the interface to my open-e 6 box being completely frozen when i locally connect with a display / KVM.

It was frozen on the standard view with IP adresses and the selftest / ok screen. but it did not answer any keystrokes and the normally blinking underscore was not blinking, leading me to believe it was just stuck.

Last time this happened the box also stopped responding to ping and i had to way to fix this issue other than a hard reboot

The critical logs doesn't reflect anything out of ordinary, other than the fact that i had to reboot it.

Any experience with this before or thoughts? It felt very random and sudden

Thank you!

Hi All,
I need to upgrade my LSI 9266 firmware, the card is installed on a DSS V7 SOHO.
To upgrade the controller firmware I can use Megaraid Storage Manager as well, but I need to upgrade the CacheVault product too (his Gas Gauge Integrated Circuit firmware). I can update Gas Gauge FW only with StorCLI commands. How can I do to run StorCli on my NAS?

Thank you
Harald

Unable to use windows ADS auth

Hello.
I encounter real difficulties using DSS 7 in our small enterprise environment running under windows server 2012 r2.

I tried everything i know so far but no way to join our active directory. I have the following message :
http://hpics.li/85572d9
What is weird is we have a very heterogeneous network with computers running under windows 7 to 10, MacOS, android devices, printers, synology and qnap nas and each device join the domain without troubles..
the message from dss is very quick, i mean i click apply and less than half a second later i have the fail. So i suppose the message is true : it can not communicate with the domain controller. But if i use the telnet console to ping the DC at 192.168.1.100 there are no packet loss and dss reaches the server...
I have already read (almost) all the checklists regarding obvisous time configuration, security options, firewall, policies and so on... :(
I am pretty sure the problem is a very very tiny small detail that i did not noticed. But witch one ? i am circumspect...

Some help would be really appreciated.

Thank you ^^
